An abandoned castle is always a spectacular image, either by the impact of the history to which it refers or by the surprise of the ingenuity of yesteryear in the construction.
Kieron Connolly has just published a book called “Abandoned Castles,” which explores the world’s most spectacular forgotten forts and is also a symbol of powerful civilizations that have been erased from the map.
“Societies are like a body: centuries pass and the body is getting weaker. But a castle is like a skull or even teeth, resisting the weather, giving us some clues about the past,” explains the author in statements to CNN Travel.
Connolly’s book shows castles all over the world that have endured over time, including 19th century military fortresses in the French Alps, 13th century castles in the Highlands of Scotland or even a medieval fortress in Syria.
