The big belly contest, weird festival in Ethiopia

Tribal men in Ethiopia had to drink a mixture of cows’ blood and milk for six months to win the big belly contest. On New Year’s Eve, the Bodi tribe in the Omo valley, southern Ethiopia, hosts the Kael festival. In addition to the traditional rituals, the resident community also hosts a contest to select the “male runner” of the year.credits: Eric Lafforgue

The special feature of the competition is only for single men, fat, and belly the more beautiful. Women of the Bodi tribe like fat men, and festivals are considered a good opportunity for men to show off their “charm”. During the six months before the festival, each tribal family was allowed to send an unmarried man to participate. Candidates will stay in a private hut, not out of it, not having sex, only to drink fresh milk and cows brought by women.

Women will give the “candidate” alcohol, sweat and sing for him before drinking about 2 liters of milk mixed with blood in the morning. They have to drink quickly before the mixture cools. On the day of the Kael festival, contestants were already fat with big belly. They covered the body of clay, ashes and over the head of a hat made of ostrich feathers. Then they walked around the “sacred tree” for hours. credits: Eric Lafforgue

After six months of fattening, some people are so fat that walking is difficult, but becoming a fat man is their dream since childhood. When the winner is chosen, the ritual ends with killing a cow with a large sacred stone. credits: Eric Lafforgue

The victorious man will return to normal life and lose weight just a few weeks later but he is still considered a tribal hero. The life of the tribe retains its traditional culture. However, many people fear that the Kael festival will be over once the Bodi tribal area is shrinking due to the economic development of the country.
